What can history teach us about Kate Middleton’s choice of wedding dress? Dr Joanna Marschner reveals the style and symbolism of two centuries of royal wedding dresses. Find out what the dresses say about attitudes to royal marriage, about the the state of the nation – and about the personality of the brides who wore them. From Princess Charlotte’s silver gown of 1826, through Queen Victoria’s iconic white silk dress, through to Princess Margaret’s Norman Hartnell designed couture gown. The dresses are part of the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection looked after by Historic Royal Palaces at Kensington Palace.

    by Princess Charlotte, are you referring to the daughter of George, the Prince Regent (later George IV)? She married in May of 1816 and died in November of 1817, so the date could not have been 1826. Great video, tho’. Wish they could’ve shown
    some portraits/photos of the brides in the dresses.

    yeah, you’re right, I’d prefer to just see the dresses and just have the woman talk in the background. She fiddled with her ring alot..it was distracting.

    Some years ago all of the major royal wedding gowns were put on display at Kensington Palace. It was an absolutely stunning event. You could get very close to each gown and really see the detail. This is what Historic Royal Palaces do so well. Alas, all you can see today at Kensington Palace is the dreadful “Enchanted” exhibtion – which looks for all the world like a low grade 6th Form art school project.

    Would have preferred to see more gowns. The narrator did a good job explaining; however, she comes across as a bit of a snob. Kate & William got married today, & Catherine looked beautiful! Her gown will surely go down in history as one of the most elegant Royal wedding dresses ever!

    Have to agree about the narrator. She didn’t need to be on camera so much. I would have liked closer and longer looks at the dresses.

    it would have been a nicer vid if they actually showed more of the dresses and less of the lady narrating it…she did a good job with explaining history but i would have really liked to see more of the dresses. thank you for sharing this.
